The myriads of migratory birds on their way south at this season of the year will .be the subject of special scientific study on the part of th-; vrioit3ora?tb-nlfgiiial socie ties aud the experts of tho Depart ment of A ricultuie. " To the average persoii only indifferently interested i i turd life there may seem little m the migration of the summer birds to furnish" date for cifititic deductions; but the mcdern student of oar native birds sees Hi these annual flights mater ial for reflection and observation of the greatest importance The constant relationship existing be-- tween our agricultural crops and the migratory birds is a fact that has only.m recent years been folly comprehended, and each season urw data for Rtudv are collected by the expert observers. The proidtm of weed destruction is, lor instance.intimately rapped up in' the migratory habit of the millions ot our summer birds Many of oar most noxious garden and field weeds produce in a single -season as many as one unndred thousand seeds, and in three' sea- sous a single one of these plants would give birth to ten billion w eads. there is only one effective agen cy that k. es in check these pro lific weeds. heu the seeds of th? weeds ripen iu the . latt summer nnd fall the millions' of migratory birds bein their journey south ward, devouring the weed seed.s at the most critical st tee of their ivs. A few of the birds eat a number of seeds throughout the whole 8hmmer, bat the vast 'ma jority eat them in theerly autumn aud early spring, a few staying North with us to pick up the seeds which fall on the ground when covered with mow. They gorge themselves wiilr the weed seeds until their stom chs are distended to three times their normal size All of our common song and plum age birds are great seed destroyers, and the blackbirds, meadow larks, sparrows, goldfinches, doves, sis- fcins, quails, grosbeaks, and grass birds will eat alt the way from one hundred to oue thousand seeds of weeds at a single meal. They be gin their annual campaign against the. weed seeds in the far North as erly as late Augsiht, and they move southward as the season tdvauces' and the seeds ripen in rhe lower part of the New England and Middle, States. heir migra tion is consequently due to alare extent to the maturing of the werd seeds, and they move south ward only so fast as they devour their favorite seeds in each vsec tiou. Fort nnateli', different species of birds choose different kinds of seeds s heir favorite food, and very few weeds escape. Thus tLe blackbirds ma ko their first raid upon the seeds of the With our improved machinery, there is no known country where I a dollar will prodnce as many bushel of rice as in the United States. In Japan one-third of an acre is a reasonable rite faro for a man. In China and India one man can, with the ue of the water buffalo, cultivate from one-half totwoacr-s. InTexasamau with a four-mule team can plant and harvest 100 acres of rice. Tie South may become independent of other section for its cereal food. The coast rice belt in Louis iana and Texas includes over 12, 000 square miles of f tirly level and very fertile prtdrie. Trior to themvaslion oftbi tertiloryby rice the land was regarded as almost worthless -except for stock range. This rice belt is bisected by ten navigable rivers and by many smaller streams. In nearly eyery township theieare one or more ridges slightly above the surrounding land. On these sur face caials itere bcilt from 20 to 150 wide. Powerful pumping plants were located on the back- of the river at tha head of the surface canals which furnish water for iirigatiou. The rice plantation now extends along the coast from New Orleans to Galveston. Clr. Colors not oly influence cattlr, but 'human beings also. On thin point some curious experiments were reported from Italy a to the effect of colors on the nervtsof the sick and insane. In the hospi tal for insane at Allessandiia special rooms are arrauged with red or blae paiat on the wall.-. A yiolont patient is brought sudden ly into blue room nnd left to tbe effects of that color on his nerves. One umniac was cur- d in ip hour; another was at peace in his ruU-d after passing a day in a mom all violet. The red room is used for the commonest form of dementia (melencboly), usually accompan ied by a refusal to take food. Af ter three hours in .the red toyco a patient afflicted in this way l eg n to be cheerful and asked for food.
